This week you should learn to use Search Engines for
finding information. Return to the main page (www.americanhistory.nu)
and then click on the red "Research Sites" button.
Then you should choose one of the Search Engines (aka - white
pages for the Internet): Altavista, Yahoo, Infoseek, Excite or
one of many others. Next, look at the questions below and
find the key words which you can type into the search engines.
For example, for question #1, the key words are "first settlement"
and "America". If you put your searches inside
quotation marks, the search engine can make a more specific search.
I recommend using Infoseek because it allows you to search within
a search to narrow down your selections. ***Hint:
You can also find the answers by browsing through the "Three
Worlds Meet" and "Colonization" sections attached
to the www.americanhistory.nu page.
1. What was the first European settlement in what is now called the United States of America?
2. What was Pocahontas's given Indian name and her Christian name? (Pocahantas was actually a nickname given to her)
3. Which country was responsible for bringing over the first slaves? When?
4. Describe what happened in the Salem Witch Trials? When did it happen? Who were the main figures involved? What was odd about the "confessions"? What can Americans learn from this event? Keep your answers limited to a paragraph.
