Effective Reading

Effective Reading is a note taking strategy in which students analyze and become active readers instead of simply viewers of text. The steps of effective reading are:

1. Divide paper into two sections and label the left side with review and the right with notes (the review section need only take up 1/4 of the width)

2. Scan the section's pictures, bold face words and any available questions. Create 3-5 questions that you expect to be able to answer after reading the section

3. Take notes for the section. Be sure to only write the main point - not complete sentences. Label each section's subheadings.

4. Answer your original questions. Go back to the beginning of your notes and in the review section write down any new words or topics learned.

5. Give your opinion of the reading including any concept you thought impressive, surprising, or informative.
