                                 The  Tale  of  Saylas
                                   By  Alyssa   Rubin
Act  One
This  scene  takes  place  in  the  forest  of  Saylas,  the  wood
nymph.

Narrator: Mesja,  Terpe, and  Drab (in  peasant  form), are  playing
by
the  big  oak.  Home  of  Saylas.

Mesja:  See that  tree  over  there,  I  believe  it  would  make  a
great  log  for  our  new  home.  Let’s  cut  it  down.

Terpe:  Ok,  let‘s  go  get  some  axes.

Saylas: No, wait don‘t cut down that tree.  Today  is a hot day. If you
cut down that tree, you will be hotter  than  you are already. Lets go
down to the stream  instead.

Drab says to himself:  It  seems  my  human friends, Terpe and Mesja
are
up to no good. What can I do about this?

Saylas: Yes I  think it will be a better  idea to go swimming in the
stream. Drab, do you want to just sit there like a log? Or are you
coming?

Mesja: Yes let‘s go to the stream.  Yeah, Drab are you coming?

Terpe: If we had more people than we could have a part!

Drab: No actually I should be going. Got to take care of the family.
Umm, well see you all  later. (Drab exits)

Narrator: Well now, didn’t he leave in a hurry?

Terpe: Well  we could always ask someone to go down. But small groups
are good also. Let‘s  just go.

Mesja: Small groups are good, let’s just go!

Terpe: That was what I was going to say!

Saylas: OK you two. Let‘s just go.

(Exit off and walk to stream.)

Narrator: Now while Saylas, Terpe, and Mesja were talking Drab went to
his heavenly home at Mt. Houtus.  Drab runs in to the dinner room. All
the gods have just sat down for lunch.

Drab: Everyone! You must hear what I have to say!

Taeki: Why do you, so puny  one,  bother us!?

Drab: It is about the humans, they are acting very weird.

Aphrodite: Talk, you little twerpe. Please my food is getting cold.

Daphroite: Yes, please do!. (Aphrodite glares at Daphroite)

Drab: My human friends, Mesja and Terpe were going to cut down a tree
in
the forest of Saylas....

Narrator: All the god’s mouths fall open with shock.

Tocst: What! Saylas! Her forest is sacred! They shall be destroyed.

Drab: Well, wait! (Tocst turns around slowly) They didn’t cut down the
forest. Saylas appeared and changed their minds, they are all at the
stream, swimming.

Tocst: Well, we shall see what is happening at the stream. (looking in
his globe, a picture of a young girl and two boys)

Drab: There they are!

Narrator: Back to Saylas, Mesja and Terpe

Terpe: Saylas, this swimming was a good idea. I needed to take this
paint and oil off my body.

Mesja: Yeah, same here. Today we helped the old man on Look out Point
paint his house. We also has this great lunch of.......

Terpe: We had fish balls and fruit He dropped his forks and knifes into
the pig fat. He didn’t even realize it until we told him. That’s why we
are covered in oil.

Mesja: I was going to say that. Terpe, you are so mean!

Terpe: To bad. I said it first.

Narrator: As Terpe and Mesja argue the gods notice the paint and oil
leaking into the water. Fish begin to rise to the top. Some were dead
already. The living prayed for help from the gods.

Tocst: I’ll save them. (With a wave of his hands all the fish vanish
from the water. And appear as suddenly as they disappeared in water
filled containers.)

Saylas notices the water, turning purple.

Saylas: Look at the water, Mesja and Terpe. It’s turning purple.

Terpe: It is, why? Maybe we should get out.

Mesja: Yes, everyone out.

Narrator: The three get out of water and stare in amazment as a demon
floats out into the sky.

Cirdo: Hello, who are you!? And where am I?

Narrator: Just before Saylas could answer another purple object began
to
emerge from the water.

Cirdo: AH! My sister. You have arrived.

Selsima: Yes, I see that you got here before me also. Where are we?

Saylas: You are in the Forest of Saylas.

Mesja: This is Saylas. She is owner of this here forest. You are in the
land of Greece.

Terpe: Who are you and where do you come from?

Selsima: We are the Demon Sisters. We have travled through time, to now
as you say, the Land of Greece.

Cirdo: Very pretty. We could have lots of fun. We are from Heri. In
Nicha. Ever been there?

Saylas: No one has ever been out of Greece. You are new here?  If so
then you must go see the gods.

Selsima: Who? The gods. Where can we find these, gods?

Terpe: They will be up in their palace, Mt. Houtus.

Cirdo: Well, can one of you show us how to get there?

Mesja: Saylas can, see is a nymph.

Saylas: Yes I can, but will you please change the water back to it’s
normal color?

Selsima: What is a nymph?

Cirdo: I can change the water back.  What color was it?

Terpe: A nymph is a magical creature, in the form of a human. Saylas is
a wood nymph, she is part of the forest. She can feel the forest.

Mesja: The water was blue, now it’s purple.

Cirdo: You feel the feelings of the forest?

Selsima: Alright, back to blue.

Narrator: All look at the water. It changes from purple to a normal
blue.

Saylas: Thank you. Now I’ll take you to Mt. Houtus.

Cirdo & Selsima: Thank you. Let’s go.

Narrator: Off the three went to Mt. Houtus. Saylas, Cirdo and Selsima.

Saylas: Tocst, and Taeki, these are the demon sisters, Selsima and
Cirdo.

Tocst: Greetings and welcome to our palace. I am Tocst, King of the
gods
and this is my wife, Taeki.

Selsima & Cirdo: Thanks you. We have been sent back in time to.....

Taeki: We know why you are here.

Selsima: How!?

Cirdo: Yes, how? Why are we here then?

Tocst: We are gods. We can read minds, and tell the past, present and
future.

Taeki: You are here to learn about the people in Greece.

Cirdo: That is correct.

Selsima: Are you two the only gods?

Taeki: No. There are more.

Tocst: Yes, there are a few more. Like: Our daughters, Aphrodite and
Daphroite. Drab and Saylas. Saylas is the special one though. She is a
nymph as you probably have heard.

Narrator: Back to Terpe and Mesja."

Mesja: Hey Terpe, now what should we do? Saylas and the demon peoples
are gone.

Terpe: How about we get on to that tree cutting that we said we would
do?

Mesja: Ok. It would be a good time to do that. Let’s go.

Narrator: Terpe and Mesja get their axes and begin to  cut trees down.
As the trees fall the animals that once sheltered there are forced to
run for safety and find new homes.

Mesja: Good work Terpe. I think we have enough lumber now. Let’s head
home.

Terpe: Yes, good work also. Home is sounding really good.

Narrator: As Terpe and Mesja leave for home Saylas and Aphrodite are
going to Saylas’s for a  sleep over.

Saylas: Well, what a day. First I stop Mesja and Terpe from cutting
down
my trees and than I meet those Demon sisters. But I’m glad you came
over. This is the best way to end a hard day.

Aphrodite: Yeah, those demon people. They were scary. Daphroite was so
mad that you didn’t invite her for our sleep over.

Saylas: How could I? I don’t even know her.

Narrator: Saylas and Aphrodite continue talking as they walk through
the
forest to the big oak. Saylas notices something different and stops.

Saylas: There is something different about this place. )looks to her
left and sees three tree stumps.) NO! Someone cut down my trees!
(begins
to cry) I love those trees!

Aphrodite: They sure did! Oh gosh. Don’t worry. We’ll find out who did
it.

Narrator: Aphrodite and Saylas go to Saylas’s home in the Big Oak and
go
to sleep. Meanwhile at Terpe’s house.......

Terpe: Look at this trash. What should we do with it?

Mesja: Why don’t we burn it? It will give us something to do, and it
will be gone.

Terpe: That’s a good idea. After we do that we can look over the log
house designs again.

Mesja: Sounds good.

Narrator: Up in the palace of the gods.

Tocst: Now Selsima and Cirdo. Would you like separate rooms?

Selsima: Together please.

Taeki: Alright then. Here is your room. Good night.

Selsima & Cirdo: Thank you very much. Good night.

Narrator: Back at Daphroite’s room.

Daphroite: I can’t sleep. It’s 11 o’clock and I can’t sleep. Why didn’t
Saylas invite me to her sleep over?! I’m her friend. I should get her
back.

Act Two
Next day. This scene takes place at the palace, Saylas’s tree, and the
stream.

Narrator: Aphrodite and Saylas decide to go for a swim before breakfast.

Saylas: I can’t believe anyone would cut down my forest. I don’t hear
any birds. Nothing.

Aphrodite: Well I swim should get your mind off it, and if it doesn’t.
It will make you feel better.

Narrator: As the two girls walked close to the stream they saw that it
was a muddy brown color.

Aphrodite: What happened! I thought it was blue!

Saylas: No! Everything is getting ruined. Why is this happening?

Aphrodite: I don’t know. Let’s go talk to my father.

Narrator: So the two girls went up to Mt. Houtus. Where Selsima, Cirdo,
Tocst, Taeki and Daphroite where having breakfast.

Aphrodite: Daddy, there is a problem. Saylas has lost many of her trees
in her forest and now the stream has turned brown.

Tocst: What! Saylas, your forest. Your trees, cut down!

Taeki: Anyone care for breakfast?

Aphrodite: Sure. We haven’t had breakfast yet.

Narrator: Saylas and Aphrodite sit down and join in with breakfast.

Taeki: So tell us more about this water problem.

Daphroite: Yes, please do. If it continues you may have to move
somewhere else.

Saylas: What do you mean I would have to move?

Aphrodite: Saylas could stay here.

Tocst: Back to the matter at hand. What about the water and the trees.
How did this happen?

Saylas: It was horrible. I could feel the pain of the trees.

Tocst: Enough! Those humans, all they do is destroy! I call war on all
of them. (begins to write a note to Mesja)

Saylas: Does anyone know where Drab is?

Narrator: All the gods knew that Saylas and Drab had a thing going.

Taeki: I don’t know. Last night he was with Daphroite because she
couldn’t sleep.

Narrator: Everyone, but Tocst looked at Daphroite.

Daphroite: Selsima, Cirdo. Didn’t you talk to Drab last night?

Selsima: Yes he came in to make sure everything was ok. He also was
wondering if we wanted anything. Very sweet thing.

Cirdo: Yes very sweet. He said he was on his way to your room.

Saylas: Well, so Daphroite, when did he leave your room last night?

Daphroite: He stayed a short time. He left saying he was going for a
walk.

Saylas: So no one has seen him?

Narrator: All the gods look away. No one has seen Drab.

Daphroite: Well, I guess no one knows. (Daphroite smiles an evil smile)

Taeki: Saylas, Aphrodite and Selsima and Cirdo. Will you all excuse
Daphroite and I. Daphroite, come with me.

Narrator: Daphroite and Taeki leave room. In the hall they quarrel.

Taeki: You have been mean to Saylas ever since she has become friends
with your sister, Aphrodite. Why? What did you do with Drab?

Daphroite: Saylas, she has everything she wants. Her own forest,
someone
who loves her, friends. She doesn’t even want to be my friend. I only
asked him to stay with me last night. I couldn’t sleep and I was
scared.
He was the only person up.

Taeki: When did he leave your room, and where is he now?

Daphroite: I don’t know. I swear. He didn’t leave my room. He is still
there for all I know.

Narrator: While Taeki and Daphroite argued, Saylas ran to Daphroite’s
room and found Drab there.

Saylas: Drab!  What are you doing here!

Drab: Saylas, I....I....

Saylas: How could you!?

Drab: Saylas, please I’m sorry. I didn’t do anything. I read her a
story.

Saylas: That’s not the point. You spent the whole night with her!

Narrator: With that Saylas ran from the room right into Taeki and
Daphroite.

Saylas: Daphroite, I never thought you of all people would do that!

Taeki: Saylas you know?

Daphroite: Yes, she does mother. She went into my room. Saylas I have
always hated you. I finally got my revenge.

Saylas: I am no longer a friend of the gods. Tell Tocst I am with the
humans.

Narrator: Taking Taeki aside Saylas said.

Saylas: Please tell Aphrodite that I will always be your friend. But
now
things are different. Good bye.

Narrator: Saylas jumped out the window and landed in the forest. She
ran
all the way to Terpe’s house.

Saylas: Terpe! Terpe! Come quickly.

Terpe: What do you want? Oh, Saylas, sorry. Mesja come here.

Mesja: Who is it? Hi Saylas. What have thee to say?

Saylas: The gods have proposed war on all the humans, because they cut
down my forest and polluted the water.

Mesja: What! So now we are at war with the gods!?

Saylas: Yes. Get ready for a battle.

Terpe: I knew we would be at war today. I felt it.

Mesja: Hey what was that? Did you feel that?

Terpe & Saylas: What?

Mesja: Listen. Do you hear that? The ground is shaking.

Saylas: That means that Tocst is coming to fight. I wonder who is with
him.

Terpe: Saylas, did you have a fight with Drab? You seem sad.

Saylas: I didn’t have a fight with him, I just dumped him.

Mesja & Terpe: Oh, alright.

Terpe: We had better get ready for the war. I have weapons over here.

Narrator: Saylas, Terpe, and Mesja all get weapons.

Mesja: I’ll go with the battle ax.

Terpe: I will be with the sword.

Saylas: I think I’ll be best with the walking stick.

Mesja & Terpe: What! Why?

Mesja: That won’t help you very much.

Terpe: Yeah, don’t you want something more powerful?

Saylas: If Drab is fighting all I need it this.

Narrator: All of a sudden Tocst appears with Drab by his side.

Tocst: Saylas, you traitor. You shall die for this.

Drab: Saylas! What are you doing here? You are a girl, you can not
fight.

Saylas: I will fight and win.

Tocst: Let her fight, she needs to learn a lesson.

Terpe: I’ll take Tocst, Saylas help me.

Mesja: That means I have to take Drab on?

Saylas: No I want to fight Drab.

Drab: No I’ll fight Mesja or Terpe, not you.

Tocst: Drab fight her. Now! Come on Mesja and Terpe.

Narrator: Tocst begins to fight Mesja and Terpe. Saylas and Drab fight.
No one talks, all is quiet. The only sound is of swords, axes and
sticks. Saylas was beating Drab, but she stopped because she knew Drab
wasn’t even trying to win.

Saylas: Why are you letting me win? I want to show everyone that I can
beat someone. I can be someone. Fight like a man. That is what you are
right?

Drab: I won’t. I am a man. I won’t fight you.

Saylas: Fine, don’t fight me. But you will never live up to anything
ever.

Narrator: Saylas began to walk away.  Drab walks after her.

Drab: So you leaving like that.

Saylas: Yes, you don’t want to fight. So I have to fight with Tocst.
Now
I can help my friends Mesja and Terpe.

Drab: But Tocst will kill you.

Saylas: I know. I want to be killed by a man. I want to help my friends.

Drab: They are humans, they destroyed your forest and your stream.

Saylas: I am a magical being. I can fix those problems anytime.

Drab: You want to be killed by a god who’s daughter was your best
friend?

Saylas: Who says I will be killed. Now leave me alone.

Drab: No, I will fight you to the death.

Saylas: Let’s fight then.

Narrator: Now Saylas and Drab are entwined in a death match.  Terpe,
Mesja and Tocst stop their fight to watch. As they watch the battle
rages on. Drab’s sword comes down on Saylas and she falls to the ground.

Drab: No, Saylas. I didn’t want to hurt you.

Terpe: You killed her.

Mesja: No, she is still breathing. Help her Tocst.

Narrator: Drab bent over Saylas. She was still breathing.

Drab: Someone do something. Don’t let her die.

Tocst: There is nothing I can do for her. I can only end her pain.

Narrator: Suddenly Aphrodite and Daphroite appear.

Daphroite: Are we to late?

Aphrodite: We can help her.

Mesja: You  are just in time.

Terpe: Save her.

Aphrodite: We can not save her, but we can make her death a happier one.

Daphroite: Yes, we will turn her into a flower.

Saylas: Aphrodite, I would like to die now. Get rid of the pain.

Drab: Do it. She will be the prettiest flower ever.

Narrator: As Terpe, Mesja, Tocst and Drab watch Aphrodite and Daphroite
wave their hands above Saylas. Slowly Saylas begins to transform into a
flower.

Aphrodite: Drab, you get to name her.

Drab: I’ll name her Saylas, after her and her forest.

Daphroite: That is a good name and this has been a long day.

Tocst: Yes it has. I would like to end this thoughtless war right now.
Please forgive me.

Mesja: Yes same here. Forgive us and in return we shall all be happy.

Terpe: Yes. You have our forgiveness if we have yours in return.

Tocst: Forgive you are.

Act Three
Now all the gods and humans have become friends. Tocst invited all the
humans to dinner to show reunification between them. This scene takes
place at two places. Saylas’s home and the gods’ palace, Mt. Houtus.

Tocst: I would right now like to say I am sorry for accusing you of all
destroying the world. No one can do that as I see now.

Mesja: You mind if I ask you a question?

Tocst: What is it?

Mesja: May I marry one of your daughters?

Tocst: My daughters? You are in love with my daughter? Yes she is yours
to have and to hold.

Narrator: Mesja stands ready to announce the good news to all.

Mesja: Daphroite, your father has given me the ok. Everyone. Listen to
me. I have asked Tocst if I may have his daughter Daphroite’s hand in
marriage. I have received a yes.

Daphroite: We are to be wed?

Mesja: Yes, as soon as you would like.

Daphroite: Tomorrow!

Taeki & Tocst: Tomorrow?

Drab: Sure tomorrow it is.

Aphrodite: A wedding tomorrow? That sounds lovely.

Terpe: Yes, Aphrodite, will you marry me?

Aphrodite: Sure. Saylas always told me what a good, kind, sweet person
you are. I have learned over the last two years that it is true.

Tocst: Two weddings?

Taeki: Why not dear?

Narrator: All look at Tocst, waiting for answer.

Tocst: All right two weddings it shall be.

Narrator: Drab silently left the palace and went down to Saylas’s tree.
As he walks up to the Big Oak all he could see were thousands of Saylas
flowers.

Drab: Look at all the Saylas’s here. They are all so pretty. I feel you
here Saylas. I will always remember you when I see these flowers….

                                             The end
