Winter Love

Night after night I return home, disappointed, discouraged. I need to consult with someone about my worries. My family had moved to a new city and I still had my mind on the awful experience I had survived in that creepy house. I think I will always remember finding the corpse of a woman, not only because it was dreadful, but also because I was a child and very impressionable.
Now I am 19. I do not have time to be bored anymore. During the winter break I always find something to do. I did not mind being new in town, though I do miss my friends. In this town, people need help everywhere.
The children’s hospital where I am working as a volunteer is near home. I wake up and go straight to the kitchen to find my parents having breakfast. “Good morning” we say simultaneously. “How are you son, you look worried, has something bad happened?” asks my dad.
“No, nothing dad” I respond, I don’t want them to worry. They know Elizabeth and they like her just as much as I do. But… I have to find out if it was her… I met Elizabeth a month ago, when we had just moved here. She was in the same nursing room I was in; I fell in love with her immediately. She was wearing jeans and a rose-colored sweater on top of her T-shirt. Her golden hair shined as the sun’s rays covered her thin body. We started to chat and I found out she worked the same hours I did, had the same interests, and she was in one of my classes at the University. Since we worked together we also had lunch together and we came out of the hospital together.
I had not asked her out because my shyness overpowered my love. One day, I decided to tell her my feelings, but that was the afternoon when I started to link the strange things that had happened, and her…
For the last week and a half, I had been noticing that some drugs and experimental medicines had disappeared from the hospital. My job was to count every single medicine in the three wooden cabinets by the door. After initially counting the medicines, I left the room. When I returned Elizabeth was leaving the nursing room. As we passed we exchanged “hello’s”. When inside I counted the medicines again to make sure there was no mistake ,but found out there were some missing. For the next five days, whenever I returned, medicines would be missing moments after I saw Elizabeth leave.
My concern about her increased when some of the patients charts were changed, making it look like they had received the medicine, which I knew they hadn’t for I stayed in the hospital, almost all day. The patients health decreased and the doctors got worried. They kept trying new medicines, but the patients never received.
One day after work, I decided to follow Elizabeth in one of her “leavings”. She turned a sharp corner into an empty alley. I stopped and rushed behind some old boxes where I could easily spy on her. She walked a few steps towards the wall at the far end of the street. A man appeared from the shadows. He was very tall, had jet-black hair and a crooked smile on his face. They talked for a while and then he kissed Elizabeth on the cheek, and disappeared as fast as he had appeared. Disappointed I left and headed home.
The next day I did not go to work, and I knew Lizzy (the nickname I had for her) was going to be worried, but I just could not take it anymore. Not knowing what to do I threw myself onto my bed and cried, and after a while fell asleep. I Don’t know how much time I slept, but when I woke up outside had grown dark and the phone was ringing. “Hello?” said a frail but melodious voice. “Hello” I answered back impatiently, even though I knew who it was.
“Oh its you Mike,” she said. I did not answer back for I was a little mad at her for not telling me she had a boyfriend, and because what she was doing with the patients by stealing the medicines. “What is the matter?” she asked “You did not come today to work”. I could not hold it anymore.
“What is the matter with you, stealing medicines and then sneaking out with your stupid boyfriend!”
She gasped and then  replied nervously “You don’t understand, I had to…”
“Slam!” I hang up the phone and disconnected it in case she tried to call back.
For the next three weeks I did not go to work, and I kept receiving calls from Elizabeth. I would tell my parents to answer and tell her I was not there. They agreed, but did not know why. They still did not know about the stealing and I wasn’t going to tell them.
Elizabeth’s face kept flashing into my head, and as hard as I tried, I could not get her out of my mind. Oh, I sure missed her smile, and her warm hand, my heart kept pumping harder, but my brain put it back into place. One day I was sitting in my living room  watching television when the doorbell rang. When I opened the door, there she stood, watching me as if studying me. “Can I come in?” she asked. Even if my head said one thing my heart made me open the door and let her in.
She went into the living room and sat beside me on the couch. “I know what you think about me, but please listen to what I have to say”. I nodded in silence. She opened her mouth only to close it again. She hesitated and I was about to speak when she said “It wasn’t me, the one who stole the medicines… It was someone else I know…”
“Why don’t you bring him to the police? Or at least can you tell me who it is?”
“No,” she answered. “He is very dear to me, I can’t bring him in, besides he said if I do he will kill me.
“Your boyfriend said he would kill you? I asked.
“He is not my boyfriend” she replied a little angry. “I can’t tell you who he is” with that she stood up and ran out the door before I could scream “Wait!”.
Even though I loved her, and I believed in her a little, I still was a little mad at her. I decided to go to the hospital next day in search for her, but she was not there. Guess who I found instead, the man I had seen back at the alley. That was my only chance to discover the truth. He headed down the street and entered a Casino.
He started talking to a fat bearded guy. “How’s Lizzy, your little sis” the bearded man said to my suspect.
That was all I needed to hear, I ran all the way to Elizabeth’s house knowing that she would be there since there was no other place to go. Her parents let me in and I ran upstairs to find her in her room lying down, her face against the pillow. “Hi” was the only thing that came out of my mouth.
She lifted her head up and looked at me. “I know what you think and I told you already it wasn’t…”
“I know” I interrupted “I am very sorry I made you go through this, I was selfish and jealous, not like  normal human being would act.”
“But, why do you now believe me?” she asked.
“I followed your brother which I thought was your boyfriend and found out the truth.” I answered.
“Please, don’t make me turn him in, I couldn’t do it, even if he is evil, he is my brother.” She pleaded.
“Maybe you wont, but I have to, people are dying because of him, you don’t want that do you? I got to for your sake and all of the patients too.”
“Ok, but I wont go, you got to do it yourself.”
“Well I’ll go to the police office immediately” I replied while turning around to go to the door.
“Wait” she blurred out “How could you have been jealous? Of who?”
“Because…” I stopped “I love you, and I would do anything to protect you, I’ve loved you since I met you.”
She stood up walked towards me and gave me a kiss directly on my mouth. The only thing I could do was smile. I turned and run all the way to the police station, where I presented the charges and in one week they had trapped Elizabeth’s brother and all of the ones who worked for him.
Now, Elizabeth and I go out almost every night. She always makes me feel happy even when I am depressed. We make a great couple. We started our studies again and now we are in all classes together learning the same things. I am very happy. We also go to the hospital when we are free and we help out, once in a while. The patients are back to normal and everything is running smoothly. If I hadn’t moved here in the first place, I would have never found the love of my life…
