| In all of the factories more people were needed. And to solve this problem what they did was hire single women. They needed people for textiles, and since most of the women had already made fabrics and cloths at home, they were fit for the job. Also single young women didn’t have families to support, in tern the company didn’t have to pay the single women as much as the men. These young people that were chosen for the job were called "Lowell Girls" In most cases the working included housing (Boardinghouses). Also it required them to attend church, banned alcohol, enforced curfews, and had reports on the "Lowell Girls" behavior. Yes they did get paid got free housing but in turn they had to be told how to live their life, which way would you have it? |
